Friday Musicale hosted our annual Scholarship Competition on Saturday, April 1, 2017. We had (14) applicants – High School Seniors who are going on to study music in college. In 1890, Friday Musicale founder Claudia L’Engle Adams started a club in her house on Margaret Street with eleven women that played music. According to Jeff Tawney, venue director, the original meeting would take place on Friday afternoons over a spread of tea and sandwiches. “They had this wonderful idea to extend it to the community. It was called Ladies of Friday Musicale, because all the members had to be ladies. Men were not allowed. This was true for the first thirty-five years until they changed the bylaws,” Goetz Neubauer, chairman of the board, says. “And a lady couldn’t become a member unless she played an instrument.” In 1922, the word “ladies” was removed, and it became Friday Musicale. Jazz Master Class Presented at Sandalwood High School September 8, 2016 Friday Musicale presented a master class by saxophonist Tivon Pennicott and the John Lumpkin Trio to high school band students at Sandalwood High School. Friday Musicale's opening night artists gave this educational outreach presentation as the first of the 2016-2017 school year. Band Director Mr. Steve Panoff welcomed the students and introduced the program. Students were surprised to hear that the trio had never before rehearsed or performed with saxophonist Tivon Pennicott.  Tivon explained that music is like another language and like with a foreign language, with intense practice, you can "carry on a conversation" with other musicians, i.e. improvise.  Three students, trombone, trumpet and saxophone players, prepared pieces to model and receive instruction for improvement from Tivon. Monday, September 12, 2016 Dear members and friends of Friday Musicale, [caption id="" align="alignright" width="150"] Mandie McKenzie[/caption] It is with mixed emotions that the Board of Directors has received and accepted the resignation of Mandie McKenzie, our Executive Director. Mandie began working at Friday Musicale in July 2010 as Office Manager/Rental Agent and transitioned to her current role as Executive Director two years later. Over the past six years, she has made significant improvements in the organization and led us through challenging situations while Friday Musicale has evolved into a presenting arts organization. Mandie will work over the next weeks with the Board of Directors to ensure a fluid transition. Christine Lamprea, Cello Master Class Presented at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts May 20, 2016 Friday Musicale presented a master class by Colombian-American cellist Christine Lamprea to high school strings students at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. This was the third educational outreach presentation of the 2015-2016 school year. Director of Strings Mr. Brian Griffin welcomed the students and introduced the program. Three students had each prepared a piece to perform in the master class, including the first movement of Cello Concerto No. 4, by Georg Goltermann, a movement from Cello Suite No. 3 in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach and the first movement of Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major by Joseph Haydn. 2016 Scholarship Recipients Awarded On Saturday, April 2, 2016, Friday Musicale and the Florida Federation for Music: St. John's District co-presented their scholarship competitions at the Friday Musicale Auditorium, located at 645 Oak Street, Jacksonville, FL 32204. [caption id="attachment_1904" align="alignright" width="375"] 2016 Scholarship Competition judges & applicants[/caption] Applications were available throughout February and March 2016 and were open to all graduating high school seniors that would be majoring in music in college. Each participant auditioned two memorized pieces and were judged based on performance only. Students were eligible to receive more than one scholarship. The Mana Quartet Master Class Presented at Sandalwood High School February 18, 2016 Friday Musicale presented a master class by The Mana Saxophone Quartet to high school band students at Sandalwood High School. This was the second educational outreach presentation of the 2015-2016 school year. Band Director Mr. Steve Panoff welcomed the students and introduced the program. The Mana Quartet began the master class by introducing themselves and their background and performed a few pieces for the students. Next they listened to different saxophone students each performing their band concert pieces. Each of the quartet members took turns working with and teaching the individual students performing.
