The November 5 concert at the Friday Musicale will feature several small groups in a delightful program of chamber wind music. The proceeds from this special fundraising event will support the organization’s annual Concerto Competition for High School Musicians, an event open to all Florida students. This 13th annual event supports music education by providing talented high school musicians an opportunity to perform a concerto with wind symphony. Applications are due March 1, and the concert will be held May 4, 2024 at Jacksonville University. The winner receives a $1,500 scholarship; the second-place award is $500.
The First Coast Wind Symphony chamber music concert on November 5 will include music by the group’s woodwind and brass quintets. Also programmed is “Classical Fugue Goes Jazz” by Italian composer Armando Ghidoni, written for a trio of flute, clarinet and piano in a unique mix of music styles. The concert also features the ensemble’s principal players in two special works. The “Divertimento for 11 Wind Instruments” by composer Gary Ziek is a traditional work of six short entertaining movements. “A Parisian in America” for 10 instruments is based on melodies by Maurice Ravel and George Gershwin written by Japanese composer Yasuhide Ito.
