Renaissance Music

11:00 am & 7:00 pm

Since 2014, the singers and players of RareSong have been immersing their audiences in the European background of the early days of Florida’s First Coast by means of their renditions of sophisticated madrigals, motets, fantasias, sea chanteys, dances, and more. Costuming, narration, and drama enhance the instrumental and vocal performances of these professionally trained musicians from the Jacksonville area, who play modern replicas of instruments such as the Cuban musician Pedro Menéndez would have brought with him to St. Augustine when he participated in Sir Francis Drake’s raid on St. Augustine in the late 16th century.

Danilo Brito – mandolin wizard & master of Brazilian choro

March 29, 2019
Danilo Brito mandolin

11am & 7pm

Danilo Brito is a youthful voice for a music that is as old as Brazil's national identity. Born in the 19th century in Rio de Janeiro, choro is the child of the same cultural parents that gave rise to ragtime, blues, and jazz in the USA. European forms melded with African ideas to produce a family of fresh, new forms throughout the New World and among them is choro. The literal translation of the word is “to cry,” but its use in naming this music is figurative and points to its emotive power. More often bright than blue, it is marked by syncopation, counterpoint, improvisation, and virtuosity. Knowledge of the form has been passed aurally from generation to generation.
