Friday Musicale presented A Musical Presentation of the Oud by Charles Ohayon to fifth grade students at Fishweir Elementary School through a grant from Linda McLucas Fisher and Michael Medill Fisher. This was the second educational outreach presentation sponsored by Linda and Michael at Fishweir Elementary School this school year. Principal Kimberly M. Dennis welcomed the students and introduced the program.
Mr. Charles Ohayon came to the United States from French Morocco in 1968. He began playing the lute (oud in Arabic) at age ten. From studying Hebrew cantorial music under one of the famous cantors in Casablanca, Mr. Ohayon gained the discipline and knowledge of the Hebrew language.
The program included songs played and sung in the five languages Mr. Ohayon speaks: French, Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish and English. Students enjoyed asking questions of Mr. Ohayon after the performance such as, "What other instruments do you play?" and "When did you begin playing the oud?". Mr. Ohayon encouraged all the students, if they were able, to study music now or as soon as they are able.
Friday Musicale is grateful to Principal Kimberly M. Dennis for her support of presenting the arts to students and to Linda McLucas Fisher and Michael Medill Fisher for sponsoring the program.
Friday Musicale plans to continue its educational outreach presentations in the Duval County Public Schools in the next school year. Interested school administrators should contact Executive Director, Mandie McKenzie, via firstname.lastname@example.org or 904-355-7584, for more information.
